Building restoration

Structural Engineering, Building Design, Refurbishment and requalification

The Project

Scope of this project was the structural retrofitting and recovery works of the 1926’s Palazzo Tirso, formerly headquarters of the Societá Elettrica Sarda and, later on, of several banks.
The client hired Studio Abis Associati to evaluate the structural conditions of the building and eventually, to design any required retrofitting work.
The building represents one of the first example of reinforced concrete structures in Sardinia, hence Abis Associati undertook a careful analysis of sections, concrete quality and  rebars both with destructive and not-destructive tests.
Being the building under the local regulations’ restrictions for historical buildings, the proposed required retrofitting works had to be invisible and respectful of the original structural concept.
Through the reduction of masses and the clever use of fiber-reinforced mortars, final works resulted in a substantial improvement of the structural capacity of the building and in a prolongation of its  service life.
